Playa’s New Recycling Program
Playa del Carmen is finally becoming more eco-conscious!
For such a picturesque part of the world, with its clear turquoise water and combed white sand beaches, it’s especially sad to see trash and glass bottles polluting the landscape in the Riviera Maya.
Have you visited Playa in the past and noticed the lack of recycling in your vacation condo? In contrast with back home, it probably felt weird to throw away cans and bottles.
Happily, the times they are a-changing! Since August 2017, the municipality of Playa del Carmen has instituted a brand new recycling program.
It’s good to see this growing city take measures to make Mexico cleaner and protect the environment. In so doing, it’s catching up with the island of Cozumel, which already has a well-established recycling program.
We welcome you to participate! Just follow the simple instructions posted in your vacation rental.
Now there will be color coded trash and recycling bins in the common areas of each condo complex. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, garbage disposal crews will collect recyclable items (glass, cans, plastic & paper).
Proper disposal of waste is so intrinsic to the health and welfare of the coral reef, which draws visitors from around the globe. In harmony with that, the documentary called Chasing Coral is showing at the Sayab Planetarium free to the public.
It is so nice to see the municipality working to raise community awareness of the need to protect and preserve the natural beauty in this part of the world. It’s something we can all take part in every day, to the benefit of our planet!
