McCarthy’s Irish Pub
I love finding new favorite spots along 5th Ave, Playa del Carmen’s famous pedestrian boulevard. With hundreds of restaurants and bars, there’s something for everyone. It really is a foodie’s dream. (And an excuse to never cook if you don’t want to!)
In March 2015, McCarthy’s opened its doors—the first Irish pub in Playa! Part of a chain of pubs across Mexico, the establishment serves beer from Ireland, Belgium, Argentina, England, Germany, etc.
The party really happens on the main floor. Tables are arranged around the stage and bar and spill out onto the patio area on the corner of 5th Avenue and 22nd Street. The people-watching is great from here since you’re right on pedestrian-friendly 5th Avenue! It’s all the entertainment you need to just sit back and watch the world stroll by! Or angle your chair towards the bar and catch the game on the big flatscreen TVs.
Upstairs is my favorite spot if I’m staying for a while. We climbed the spiral staircase where a massive grandfather clock seemed to welcome us; centered under a chandelier. Found a cozy nook by the pool table and enjoyed the breeze from the ocean breezes wafting through the wall-to-wall windows.
The few times I’ve been to McCarthy’s, the music suited the scene so well—Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and U2. The shamrock-green walls, brick accents, dark wood furniture with plaid upholstery, and high ceilings with exposed beams…everything combined to create a friendly relaxed vibe…exactly what I’m looking for when I visit a pub!
The food was pretty good—we ordered the promotional appetizer platter that comes with 2 one-liter draft beers. (About 2 pints each!) The onion rings, cheese sticks and chicken nuggets were delicious. I was a little disappointed with the wings and chili fries but I have high standards for those.
All in all, everything was tasty and the ambiance was right on par. For a Canadian girl who misses her pub food, this measured up pretty well. I’ll definitely be going back!
