Do you love the beauty of the sea and find yourself fascinated with the variety of colorful marine life that roams beneath the surface?

Does it at the same time make you a bit uncomfortable to jump in with them and get up close and personal?

If you want to see some of the local aquatic life without facing the fear of being bitten or stung or anything else, now you can! Stay perfectly dry while you enjoy undersea flora and fauna by visiting Playa del Carmen’s new Aquarium.

You don’t have to venture too far out of the way from your downtown condo. L’Aquarium is located just off of famous 5th Ave, on stylish new Calle Corazon between 12th and 14th. (Look for the H&M factory store.)

You can be out doing a little shopping or just seeing the sights on 5th and step into the aquarium for a visit. The hours of operation are between 11am and 9pm. Currently, general access is $15 USD per person, but they do offer local discounts if you qualify for such.

The aquarium isn’t huge but it there is no wasted space and you’ll always be feasting your eyes on something. More than 7 million liters of water is filtered through daily; just shy of 2 million gallons. There are 45 different themed exhibits to enjoy, with roughly 200 different sea creatures to observe and learn about, from sharks and rays to seahorses and coral life.

Count on spending an hour or so for your tour. You can enjoy fun, unique features such as the jellyfish room, which is full of mirrors and optical illusions that will leave you with a special flavor and experience. This is a fun, easy and accessible excursion for all ages and makes for a great rainy day activity!
