Fresh Fish at La Tarraya
mily-owned La Tarraya was established back in 1968, when Playa was just a tiny, unheard-of fishing village. Taking its name from the Spanish word for casting net, the restaurant serves the freshest seafood, caught daily at 5am!
Conveniently located at the beach between 2nd and 4th Street, La Tarraya is nestled under coconut palms, with plastic beach chairs, tables and umbrellas set out daily from noon to 9pm. It’s within steps of Plaza Marina and Xaman Ha, and only a few blocks from El Faro, Luna Encantada, Corto Maltes and Ocean Plaza.
This charming local restaurant is my favorite spot to take SCUBA friends after we have finished a dive. The casual setting lets patrons stroll up from the beach and keep our toes in the sand while enjoying a burger and a beer (50 pesos total) or a fishbowl margarita (50 pesos). The delicious food, reasonable prices and stunning scenery can’t be beat!
Dining at La Tarraya is enjoyable in the evening too. Decorative lights on the palm trees flicker on and the stars twinkle overhead as the waves lap the shore. Groups of musicians wander by—toting harps, guitars, violins—offering a song or two for tips. Large filets of fish are served either in garlic butter, breaded, with tartar sauce or in colorful Veracruz style (with jalapenos, tomatoes, onions & olives). The ceviche and calamari are also excellent.
Several of the servers speak English, which is nice! Near the ferry dock and within an easy walk from your downtown condo, the scenery is beautiful. Be sure to check it out the next time you stay with Rentals Your Way!
