Ironman Cozumel is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest event held on the island every year! From dozens of countries, over a thousand athletes and their families come to Cozumel for this grueling test of endurance.
This year, the race is being held on Sunday, November 27th. It will be precluded by an Expo that will be held at the Cozumel Convention Center on Thursday, November 24th [12 – 6pm], and on Friday, November 25th [9am – 6pm]. At the Expo there are meet-and-greets as well as triathlon related products, event souvenirs, bike services, etc.
Up for grabs this year is a total purse amounting to $100,000 USD in prize money. It will be awarded to the top 10 male and female finishers. Divvied up in a roll-down fashion, both the 1st place male and female contestants will score $20,000 all the way down to the 10th-place finishers each receiving $750.
Athletes begin this demanding triathlon race with swimming 3.8km (2.4mi) in the Caribbean Sea. Upon getting out of the water, they quickly throw on their cycling gear and start pedaling down a 180km (112mi) stretch of sectioned-off road where they complete the closed circuit 3 times. Following that stretch, they dump their bikes and run to the finish line, which, by the way, is only 42.2km (26.2mi) away.
You may wonder how or what to do if you desire to watch some of the race. From almost any point along the course, you can observe the athletes’ progress. There is also a VIP tent that will be set up very near to the finish line. Tickets for this can be purchased online.
