Heaven on Earth
El Cielo (meaning heaven), is incredibly beautiful and serene. If you’re visiting the Riviera Maya and want to see paradise under the sea, then a visit to El Cielo just off the shores of the island of Cozumel is in store for you!
Celestial beauty aside, El Cielo gets its name from the hundreds of starfish that gather in its shallow pristine waters. They can be seen with the naked eye as you wade along its sandy bottom. But it’s even more stunning if you put your flippers on and snorkel throughout this beautiful park.
Located about 800 meters (1/2 mile), off the coast of Cozumel, this gorgeous spot can only be accessed by boat or catamaran. You can get a boat at Playa Palancar or La Laguna de Colombia, along with snorkeling equipment.
Only about 3 to 4 feet deep, the water is mesmerizingly beautiful with its turquoise blue color. A broad, powdery white sand bar goes as far as the eye can see. You can stand in crystal-clear water and wade and float to your heart’s content!
Take out your snorkel gear and explore—enjoy the starfish as well as the many of types of reef fish and marine life. You might see spotted rays, turtles and more. Or just relax with your toes in the sand and a drink in your hand. Wind down and let your stress ebb away as you soak up the chill ambiance. Depending on the tour you go with, you can even have a little party out there with the crew and your friends.
Next time you’re on the island of Cozumel, do yourself a favor and check into visiting El Cielo. It’s one of the cleanest and most beautiful locations in the Caribbean. When you visit this natural wonder, you’ll realize you don’t always have to look up to see the stars.
