When you combine turquoise blue water, the warm Caribbean sun with a cool ocean breeze and delicious seafood, do you know what you have? El Merkadito beach club in Puerto Morelos, Mexico.
This fantastic little restaurant is right off the main square (on Avenida Rafael Melgar, just 100 yards or so from the lighthouse). It’s a wonderful place to stop in and grab a few delicious ice-cold margaritas and enjoy the scenery, or have a delectable dinner courtesy of the Caribbean. (Along with a few ice-cold margaritas!)
There’s no question…Merkadito’s specialty is definitely the seafood. But the menu has some variety beyond that. You can order a nice Angus burger if you choose, or a New York strip. I recommend the fettuccine with lobster!
If you’re a fan of ceviche, they have a great mixed ceviche with shrimp, octopus, and fish. (Ceviche is a local specialty! It’s made of raw, incredibly fresh ingredients cured in lime juice and sometimes seasoned with chili.)
There is a nice variety of beverages on the menu; you’ll find an assortment of Mexican beers (and did I mention the margaritas)! They serve their margaritas in an aluminum camping style cup which I personally find to be a pretty cool, unique touch.
El Merkadito also has very fun décor with a lot of fishing and tropical trinkets, antique signs and posters, etc. The details provide excellent conversation pieces and keep things interesting as you savor your
meal. Pretty much every corner of the restaurant makes for a fantastic photo opp!
It’s pretty rare to find the right blend of atmosphere and scenery plus quality food and service right on the water! El Merkadito has it all. There are even a handful of lounge chairs down on the beach where you can relax and watch the surf break a few hundred yards out on the reef. Then take a nice stroll down the beach to walk off a delightful meal!
