Over the last few years, SUP (Stand Up Paddle boarding / surfing), has become incredibly popular all around the world. It’s a sport that’s fun and easy to learn, and what better place to try it than the turquoise waters of the Caribbean!
Stand up paddle boarding can be a little more challenging in the ocean, but it’s a lot of fun too. It’s an amazing experience to glide over the crystal clear waters around Cozumel. When you stay at El Cantil, you’re in the perfect place to explore!
For the most part, the surface currents on the sheltered western coast are tranquil. You will hardly ever see waves. But if this will be your first SUP experience, getting a lesson is a good idea. An instructor can help you with your balance and show you how to maneuver the board properly.
There are several spots on the island that offer some instruction with your board rental and will even take photos for you and your crew while you play around out on the water. (Check out Mr. Sancho’s beach club, Isla de Pasión or El Cielo for a fantastic experience. Going at sunset is especially spectacular!)
You won’t need much practice to start feeling comfortable and having fun. Many people love it so much that, after a few sessions, they go out and purchase their own gear!
Kayaking is great, but SUP gives you a better view of the colorful reef fish and coral life below you. Keep an eye out for Nemo and Dory! You might even see a few starfish here and there. Plus you get a great core workout without really realizing it.
See what all the fuss is about with SUP and try it out while you’re staying on the beautiful island of Cozumel.
