Best Onion Rings in Town

Published on January 11, 2016 by admin

When you stroll Playa del Carmen’s famous 5th Avenue, you’ll pass a seemingly boundless array of restaurants. There are so many great choices for you to pick from, it can be overwhelming!

Often, the common or popular choice is what’s closest to your downtown condo or which restaurant has the most patrons. Where there are happy diners, others will follow!

Texas Burger Co. is a standout choice, especially if you hit it during happy hour and load up on delicious appetizers. In my books, this little spot owns a pretty special title here in Playa del Carmen—currently they are sitting on top of the Onion Ring world as the proud owners of the ‘Best Onion Rings in Town’ (in our humble opinion).

First of all, you don’t even see onion rings on too many menus around these parts of Mexico. Now you have some that are beer battered and crispy fried to golden perfection! This is a pretty well-kept secret and a must to stop in and check out if you’re a fan of the ‘ring’.

Another thing worth mentioning is they do make some excellent drinks here as well! (Granted, they have a lot more competition when it comes to good drinks than they do onion rings.) Happy hour is 2 for 1 cocktails. We recommend the piña coladas and mojitos—they’re fantastic!

Located between Calle 20 & 22 (up on the north end of 5th), this sports bar and restaurant pretty much sits opposite of McCarthy’s Pub. It doesn’t have the flashy look and fanfare as some of the places along the way, rather the ambiance of the place really suits its name. The rustic country-style feel is laidback, welcoming and relaxed.

Inside they have a nice big bar, with several TVs (and air conditioning if you need to get out of the tropical heat). Outside there are TVs as well and open-air seating. When there isn’t a game on, the people-watching is pretty entertaining on 5th!

Obviously, as mentioned, the onion rings are at the top of the list to try…our whole table of Texans and Canadians agreed! There are really tasty burgers too and good fish and chips. They also serve other bar fare
and the staff are friendly and helpful.

If, during your vacation, you feel you need a lil break from the Mexican or Italian fare that is most common in Playa (or maybe you just need a lil taste of home), Texas Burger Co. might just the be the place for you!
