A Caribbean Shopping Spree
Running parallel with the beach, the pedestrian boulevard goes for miles. It’s lined with lively local shops, restaurants, sidewalk cafes, sports bars and a couple new trendy malls. Yep, you read that right! Playa now has not one but THREE high-end shopping malls right in the heart of downtown.
If you’ve taken the ferry to Cozumel, you’ve probably grabbed a coffee and donut or done some window shopping in Paseo del Carmen, straight up from the dock. It’s where Playacar meets 5th Ave, and it’s a fancy little shopping district. (Watch your step on the uneven cobblestones around here. It’s pretty but kinda treacherous, especially if you’re wearing heels, ladies!)
Starbucks and Krispy Kreme aside, my favorite feature of this mall is the brand new market/eatery downstairs. The tacos and chilaquiles are fantastic. There’s also a cupcake shop and international beer bar. Be sure to check it out!
A little further down 5th (going north), you’ll come cross Calle Corazón, a U-shaped mall with condos on top. We local expat girls were pretty excited when this opened earlier this year, all because of H&M clothing store! With 3 levels of merchandise, it’s more than enough to keep us happy when we’re missing home.
Walking down this stretch of 5th is a cool experience—you’ve got old Playa on one side and new Playa on the other. I recommend visiting the Mexican textile store (on the beach side). The colorful handmade garments are beautiful and so unique.
An Apple store in Playa del Carmen? Yes sir, we’ve got one of those! It’s in the Quinta Alegría mall on the corner of 5th and Constituyentes. You’ll also find yet another Starbucks, a mini Victoria’s Secret, and a Harley Davidson store, plus way more. The breezy ocean views from the Sanborns restaurant up top are quite nice.
If you’re able to pull yourself off the beach, stretch your legs a little and shop on 5th Avenue. Even if you don’t spend a peso, it’s a good time!
